My brother turned us on to this wireless thermometer. Grill or roast to perfection - you determine doneness and it will tell you when it is ready. Did I mention that it talks? From 330 feet away.

What do you buy when you go out of town? I am afraid I get excited about going to the grocery. Pitiful.

Hot, ain't it

A few weeks ago we ordered - or, rather the rep in the next town ordered a fireplace insert for us. A Jotul from Maine. They are all about the same. They all qualify for the IRS Energy Efficiency Tax Credit. You need an authorized rep to install them or your warranty is not good in certain situations. So, this rep has been in the business for 30 years - he came by and measured our fireplace, ordered it, brought it up two weeks ago and "installed" it.

So . . . . here we are . . . . still waiting on a "piece". Because when it was installed, somehow it was a little over 2" too narrow  - on each side. The "piece" is shop talk for a patch job that will go around the entire opening to cover the space left on the sides that should have been covered by the new exciting insert.

I Hate RJ

This product was introduced last April by the OPI people. They were the first company to support and donate to the Lung Cancer Foundation. Our family lost two very important people to lung cancer and one to emphysema. From the LCFA:  BreatheLIFE

an article from Self magazine:

opi-nails-lung-img.jpgToday's beauty find: OPI Breathe Life donates to the Lung Cancer Foundation of America (LCFA).
What it is: A new silvery-blue shade from OPI that helps raise funds for the prevention, early detection and cure of lung cancer: Breathe Life, $9.
Why it's cool: This OPI shade is perfect for Spring's bright trend. Your nails will not only look chic, but you will be supporting the fight against the number one killer of women in the U.S., according to the LCFA.
Where to find it: Find Breathe Life at your nearest Ulta, JCPenney, Dillard's or Pure Beauty. Find more info on Lung Cancer here.

WASHINGTON - Tobacco use will kill 6 million people next year from cancer, heart disease, emphysema and a range of other ills.
The new Tobacco Atlas from the World Lung Foundation and the American Cancer Society estimates that tobacco use costs the global economy $500 billion a year in direct medical expenses, lost productivity and environmental harm.

"Tobacco accounts for one out of every 10 deaths worldwide " the report said.

Last week the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on launched a tobacco center to oversee cigarettes and other related products, after winning the power to do so from Congress in June. On Tuesday it set up a committee of advisers to help guide it.

Some other findings from the report, available at http://www.tobaccoatlas.org/:
+ 1 billion men smoke.

+ About 250 million women smoke daily.
+ Smoking rates among women are either stable or increasing in several southern, central and eastern European countries.
+ Tobacco kills one-third to one-half of those who smoke. Smokers die an average of 15 years earlier than nonsmokers.
+ 50 million Chinese children, mostly boys, will die prematurely from tobacco-related diseases.
+ Tobacco use will eventually kill 250 million of today's teenagers and children.
+ Nearly one-quarter of young people who smoke tried their first cigarette before the age of 10.
+ Occupational exposure to secondhand smoke kills 200,000 workers every year.
+ One hundred million people were killed by tobacco in the 20th century.

Publicly traded cigarette makers include Altria Group Inc's Philip Morris unit, Reynolds American Inc's R.J. Reynolds Tobacco, Lorillard Inc's Lorillard Tobacco Co and Star Scientific Inc.

Viva Villaware !

[V2160] - Villaware® Uno™ Pro-Press™ Contact And Panini Grill

We don't have a Panera Bread or a Panini Grill or anyone that makes these great sandwiches. So, we ordered a panini grill from Amazon Monday and guess what we had for dinner last night?
We just piled whatever we had in the fridge out on the counter and everyone made their own. We had some red peppers, onions, tomatoes, a lot of different cheese, portobellos, left over grilled chicken, spinach, asparagus  . . . . . . . and just happened to have some good sour dough bread. Yummo. What would we do without Amazon?

Eat Your Vegetables

Veggie Wash is made of natural ingredients from corn, coconut, lemon and grapefruit seed extract. It contains no harsh chemicals.

If you do not want to buy it you can certainly make your own - I like the convenience of having it already made.

You can  mix 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar, and 1 cup cold tap water, shake well, and apply to your produce. Rinse well.   Or........
1 Tablespoon of lemon juice to 2 Tablespoons of baking soda with 1 cup of water. Spray and  let sit for a few minutes then rinse. Put these in your own spray bottle.  Or.....
Grow your own?

Better safe than sorry I feel. While our vegetables are still in the field they are controlled with petroleum-based pesticides and other agricultural chemicals that are specifically engineered to be waterproof so they won't wash off with rain or irrigation.  Most are also treated with a wax coating so they will look pretty and shiny and prolong shelf life! The wax coating traps chemicals and other contaminants.  Field workers, transportation workers, grocers, other shoppers - an average of more that 20 strangers handle your food before you put it in your cart.  Of course, I don't run out and buy this  . . . . I have to order it online.

Can you believe I have to mail order oats? No one here carries steel cut oats. They carry the "done in one minute" kind that kill people.
Five months ago our local merchant told me "we'll gits
